HARRISBURG – The Northern Tier Workforce Development Board (NTWDB) has been awarded $150,000 in state funding to continue its career coach program in area school districts, according to Reps. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) and Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford/Potter). The board serves schools in Bradford, Sullivan, Susquehanna, Tioga and Wyoming counties.

“This grant will help businesses and school districts work together to better prepare students for in-demand careers in our region and beyond in an ever-changing workforce,” said Pickett. “The board’s highly-successful career coach program is more important than ever as the economy recovers from the pandemic, and I am pleased it will be available to our young people for another year.”

The program introduces students to careers and employment pathways available to them. Career education and exploration activities will be provided to students in grades K-12, and local businesses will contribute through connections with students and educators.

“We have great career opportunities here, and we have great students. We just need to bring them together,” Owlett said. “This grant is an important investment in our region’s future, and I applaud the Northern Tier Workforce Development Board for its outstanding work to meet the needs of our employers and our students.”

The NTWDB is made up of executives from area businesses, labor organizations, adult education and literacy, higher education, economic and community development, and social services who oversee the Northern Tier region’s job training and placement programs.

The funding was made available through the Business-Education Partnership (BEP) Grant Program, which is administered by the Department of Labor & Industry. BEPs offer career-related experiences and opportunities for students through soft-skills development, internships, workplace shadowing, and career mentoring.

The NTWDB was one of 22 similar organizations statewide that shared nearly $3.1 million in BEP grant funding.
