Town hall meeting to be held as part of event
ATHENS – Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) reminds residents planning to attend her annual senior expo that they have the option of using public transportation to get there. The free event will be held this Friday, June 21, at Athens Lynch-Bustin Elementary School from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The school, which is air-conditioned, is located at 253 Pennsylvania Ave. in Athens. From Route 220, take the second Athens Business Exit to Pine Street. Signs will be posted directing participants to school parking. Shuttle service will be provided from the school’s parking lot to the building’s front door.
Public transportation is available via BeST Transit’s door-to-door Senior Shared Ride and Persons With Disabilities (PWD) transportation programs and the general public fixed-route (Route 15 and Route 10). Registered seniors (age 65 or older) and registered PWD passengers must call by 11 a.m. the business day before (Thursday, June 20) to schedule their respective trips to the event.
The general public fixed route is also available for residents to use to the expo. Passengers can catch the 9:30 a.m. bus at the Sullivan Terrace. The bus will arrive at Progress Building in Towanda at 10 a.m. Passengers will then need to transfer to the northbound Route 10 bus that leaves the Progress Building at 10:30 a.m. The Route 10 bus will travel to Greens Landing and travelers will need to transfer at Greens Landing to connect with the 11 a.m. Valley Loop bus. The bus, on this particular day, will deviate to the expo.
Passengers needing to return to Sullivan County will have to catch the 1:45 p.m. Valley Loop bus from the expo southbound to Greens Landing. Passengers will transfer at Greens Landing to the Route 10 connector 2:10 p.m. bus. The bus will arrive to the Progress Building at approximately 2:40 p.m. There, passengers can take the Route 15 fixed route back to Sullivan County.
More than 80 exhibitors will take part in the expo and be available to provide information on health care, insurance, nutrition and exercise, financial planning, fraud protection, government services, veterans benefits and more. Refreshments will also be offered.
At 11:30 a.m., Pickett will hold a town hall meeting in the school’s cafeteria to provide an update on state budget negotiations and discuss her legislative priorities during the current session.
As in previous years, a free residential paper shredding service will be available from 10 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
In addition, the Bradford County Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring the prescription drug take-back drop-off box so that residents can safely dispose of unused or expired medications.
A representative from PennDOT will also be available to discuss REAL ID, answer questions and look at identity documents.
Anyone with questions about the expo can contact Pickett’s Towanda office at 570-265-3124 or her Sayre office at 570-888-9011. To prepare for the expo, her district offices will be closed all day on Thursday, June 20.
