Pickett Offers Thoughts on Governor’s Budget Blueprint
HARRISBURG – Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) said today that she is cautiously optimistic about the direction of Pennsylvania’s future after hearing Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposal for the 2013-14 state budget.

The $28.44 billion spending plan is about 2.4 percent over the current year’s spending plan and seeks to invest more in public education, public safety, and human services, and to further streamline government operations. This assumes that state revenues are on target to finish the 2012-13 year and increase by 1.5 percent during the next fiscal year.

“Governor Corbett presented to us his vision for his priorities during the next fiscal year, and I am optimistic that we can put more resources toward the programs and services that are the core functions of government,” Pickett said. “Due to the keen attention we have placed on keeping state government in check and reversing past trends, we are in a better position now to look ahead and work on some of the tough challenges that lie ahead.”

Corbett’s budget address focused on funding priorities for education, transportation, public safety, and human services, along with pension modification proposals. Many areas of the proposed budget include the same level of funding as the current budget.

Pickett was also pleased that a portion of his proposal includes a look at Pennsylvania’s economic competitiveness and an effort to rein in tax rates that have hampered private-sector job growth.

“I am pleased to see that Governor Corbett is proposing tackling some of the biggest issues state government is facing in the year ahead,” Pickett said. “However, those big issues come with major challenges, for which there are no easy answers. It will be our job over the next few months to take an in-depth look at this plan.”
