Pickett Leads House Recognition of Veterans’ Appreciation Day, Picnic

HARRISBURG – To acknowledge the sacrifices of veterans hailing from Bradford County, as well as throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) has secured unanimous House passage of legislation to designate July 21, 2013, as Veterans’ Appreciation Day in Pennsylvania.

House Resolution 114 will designate July 21, 2013, as Veterans’ Appreciation Day in the Commonwealth, in conjunction with the annual Veterans’ Appreciation Day picnic, which will be held in Wysox, in honor of all veterans and as a way to show appreciation for their courageous sacrifices.

Pickett said this year’s picnic will honor the four individuals who started the Veterans’ Appreciation Day Picnic in Bradford County -- the late Joseph Larnard, the late Merle Young and the late Steve Fasset, along with the only living member of the group, Don McNeal.

“These four men not only agreed that something needed to be done to show the community’s appreciation to our veterans, but they stayed up late to cook the food, gathered supplies and other refreshments, and solicited donations from community groups and businesses, along with their own Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 44,” Pickett told her colleagues prior to the House vote. “These men exemplified what it means to be a veteran. They all served in the Vietnam War, and while their service to our country is noble, it’s what they – and their supportive families – did when they returned home that speaks volumes of their dedication to our country and to our community.”

The picnic will also pay tribute to the 60th anniversary of the Korean War Armistice Agreement, which was signed on July 27, 1953.

This Veterans’ Appreciation picnic not only reaches out to the veterans who live in the community, but those who may be homebound, and of course, to the families who give their love and support each day for our men and women in uniform.

“By marking this anniversary at this year’s picnic, we seek to remember all of the men and women from Bradford County – and in fact, all of Pennsylvania – who were part of the Korean War and any conflict in which America sent her sons and daughters,” Pickett added.
