Pickett Votes to Make Public School Expenses Available Online
HARRISBURG – In another step toward greater openness and accountability, Rep. Tina Pickett (R-Bradford/Sullivan/Susquehanna) has voted in favor of legislation to put all public school expenditures and revenues online.

Passed by the House on Monday, the legislation would require the state Department of Education to create the SchoolWATCH website, so that residents can easily find the budgets and expenditures of school districts.

“This legislation is modeled after the successful PennWATCH website that was established a couple of years ago to track every dollar of state government spending,” said Pickett. “As we have seen with PennWATCH and as we expect with SchoolWATCH, the public will be able to see, through an easy-to-use Internet website, how many dollars are being spent by local school districts. This is one more step in opening up government and letting the people see how their hard-earned tax dollars are being used.”

The website would include the annual financial statements of school districts, charter schools, regional charter schools, cyber charter schools and area vocational-technical schools, along with the final adopted budgets of public school entities.

In total, Pennsylvania’s 500 school districts spend about $28 billion each year.

The creation of this website is intended not to place any additional costs on local districts. Under the legislation, the implementation would be phased in.

The proposal now heads to the state Senate for consideration.
